Bromantic actioner Point Break is the most recent addition to the seemingly endless conveyor belt of Hollywood remakes, in step with HitFix.
The 1991 movie is just about the top of buddy action flicks, deftly combining cops and robbers capers, extreme sports, and without equal yin and yang frenemies (the righteous pairing of Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze).
Kathryn Bigelow directed the original, however the remake doesn’t have a helmer just yet. That said, it already has a screenplay by Kurt Wimmer (Salt, Ultraviolet), and Warner Bros and Alcon Entertainment seem keen to get things moving quickly.
Alcon co-founders Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove made the next statement: “Who doesn’t love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills?
“Kurt’s take infuses the tale and characters with new twists and settings. We’re very excited to be in business with Kurt, and Michael DeLuca, Chris Taylor, and John Baldecchi.”
Point Break saw Reeves’ FBI agent Johnny Utah attempt to infiltrate a gang of bank robbers by joining their surfing circle, only to seek out his loyalties conflicted when he strikes up a friendship with leader Bodhi (Swayze).
Given the above statement, it’s not yet clear quite how closely the remake will emulate the sooner model. Will the nature names remain intact? Will they dare attempt to compete will the fantastic foot chases? Are there any young actors who can fill the Reeves/Swayze roles?
More in this as we get it.
