13 Sep

Darby Rahme was in a brand new city and didn’t know a soul, so she searched for friends within the same place she’d search for an apartment, a date or an awful lot on sushi: the web. Rahme, 25, moved to Toronto last fall to begin a task in marketing with an actual estate company. Originally from Calgary, and having spent most of her life out West, she didn’t have any buddies within the Big Smoke. “I literally knew no one,” she recalls. “It’s really tough. Everyone in Toronto is so busy.” So Rahme logged directly to to search out friends. It’s a cyber-collection of social and professional groups that permits users to browse for events of their area that attract their profession, hobbies, fitness goals or interests. One of the choices that Rahme had: Downtown Toronto Girls for “meeting and becoming friends” with other ladies who live downtown; Gay Geeks Toronto; The Budget Social Meetup Group to have a good time while staying frugal; the Mystery Book Club; and Couples For Friendship, that’s “not for the needs of swinging.”–making-connections-in-the-big-city-is-tough-but-many-are-finding-the-internet-a-source-for-more-than-dating
